Cartagena’s streets, then the Sierra Nevada the hard way: four days of jungle trekking to Teyuna, the Lost City, with Tayrona’s beaches and Palomino’s slow river as the reward on the far side.
Cartagena, inside the walls
Land, drop bags, and give the evening to the old town: the clock tower at dusk, fruit sellers packing up on Plaza Santo Domingo, a first arepa de huevo eaten standing. It is theatrical and it knows it — enjoy the show.
Getsemaní and the real market
Morning in Bazurto market with a guide — loud, wet, unmissable — then afternoon drifting Getsemaní’s murals and plazas. Eat where the chairs are plastic; dance where the speakers are homemade.
Along the coast to Santa Marta
Four hours east by shuttle. Santa Marta is a working port with a charming old core — stock trek supplies, sign your paperwork at the operator’s office, and sleep early. The mountains start tomorrow.
Trek day one: into the Sierra
Jeep to Machete Pelao, lunch, then the first climb — hot, honest and mercifully short. Camp one has bunks, cold showers and a river pool that fixes everything.
Trek day two: Kogi country
The trail contours through cacao and coca to Mutanzhi, a Kogi village where your guide — often Kogi or Wiwa himself — explains what the Sierra means to the four peoples who never left it. Longest day; best swimming.
Trek day three: the 1,200 steps
Before dawn, wade the Buritaca and climb the mossy stone staircase the Tairona cut eight centuries ago. Teyuna’s terraces open out of the cloud forest at first light — you will have the site nearly to yourselves for two hours.
Trek day four: down and out
Retrace the valley in one long push — knees complain, spirits don’t. Jeep back to Santa Marta by late afternoon, first hot shower in four days, seafood dinner on the malecón.
Tayrona’s beaches
Early entry at El Zaino, the jungle boardwalk to Arrecifes and on to Cabo San Juan — the postcard cove with the hut on the rock. Swim where the flags allow; the currents here drown the overconfident every year.
Palomino, horizontally
An hour further east, Palomino runs at hammock speed. Float the river from the foothills to the sea on an inner tube, then do absolutely nothing with great commitment.
Back west, fly out
Morning bus to Santa Marta’s little airport — or push through to Cartagena if your flight leaves there. Salt in your hair, mud still on your boots: correct.
Good to know
The Ciudad Perdida trek can only be done with licensed operators and the all-inclusive price is fixed across all of them — pick by guide quality, not cost. Book two to three weeks out in high season.
The trail closes every September for indigenous ceremonies. Check dates before building the trip around it.
Tayrona pre-sells entries online and caps daily visitors; buy the day before. Yellow fever vaccination certificates are checked at the gate sporadically — carry yours.
Shorter or longer?
One Cartagena day instead of two, and end at Tayrona — dropping Palomino saves two days without touching the trek.
Swap the four trail days for two nights up in Minca and a full Tayrona overnight. Cuts roughly €400 / $432 and all the mud.
Add the Rosario Islands from Cartagena and two days in Minca’s coffee hills between city and trek — the acclimatisation helps.
