The Islands That Rewrote Biology
A hotspot archipelago where the islands get older from west to east, three ocean currents collide, and nothing on land ever learned to fear a human. What Darwin actually noticed, what two centuries of whalers and goats destroyed, and what thirty years of eradication programmes have rebuilt.
The first thing that goes wrong in the Galápagos is your instinct. A sea lion is asleep across the path and does not move. A marine iguana on the black rock turns its head, registers you, and goes back to sneezing salt. A mockingbird lands on your boot to investigate the laces. Every reflex a traveller has developed about wild animals — approach slowly, expect flight, be grateful for a distant glimpse — is useless here, and the reason is the single most important fact about the archipelago.
These islands never had land predators. Nothing that walked here ate anything that walked here. The animals therefore never evolved a flight response to a large mammal moving upright, because until a few centuries ago no such thing existed within a thousand kilometres. What visitors experience as tameness is not tameness. It is the absence of a lesson.
Volcanoes in the wrong ocean
The Galápagos sit roughly a thousand kilometres off the Ecuadorian coast, on a hotspot in the Nazca plate. The plate moves east, the hotspot does not, and the result is a conveyor belt of islands: the youngest and most volcanically active in the west — Isabela and Fernandina, still erupting — and the oldest, worn down and subsiding, to the east. Española, one of the eastern islands, is on the order of three to four million years old. Fernandina is a fraction of that.
That age gradient is why the archipelago is a laboratory rather than merely a zoo. Species that colonised an old island have had millions of years to diverge; the same lineage on a young island has had far less. You can, in effect, read time across the map.
The currents do the rest. Three of them converge here: the cold Humboldt from the south, the cool Cromwell upwelling from the west, and warm Panama water from the north-east. The consequence is an equatorial archipelago cold enough for penguins and fur seals, productive enough to support enormous seabird colonies, and stratified enough that the water on one side of an island is a different ecosystem from the water on the other.
What Darwin actually noticed
The popular version has Darwin arriving in 1835, examining the finches, and grasping natural selection on the spot. The real sequence is slower and more interesting.
He spent five weeks in the islands and collected finches carelessly, without consistently recording which island each came from — a mistake he had to repair afterwards using the labelled specimens of the Beagle’s crew. What struck him at the time was not the finches at all but a remark by the vice-governor of the penal colony on Floreana, who mentioned that he could tell which island a giant tortoise came from by the shape of its shell.
That observation is the seed. Tortoises on wet, vegetated highlands have domed shells and graze at ground level. Tortoises on dry, low islands where food grows above the ground have saddleback shells, notched at the neck, allowing the head to reach up. Same lineage, different island, different body — driven by what there was to eat.
It took Darwin more than twenty years to publish. The finches — thirteen or so species differentiated principally by beak, from heavy seed-crushers to fine insect probes — were named for him by the ornithologist John Gould and became the textbook case only later. They have since been studied continuously on the tiny island of Daphne Major for decades, in one of the longest-running field studies in biology, and the results showed something Darwin assumed was invisible: measurable evolutionary change in beak dimensions within a few generations, driven by drought and by the seed sizes that survived it.
Evolution here is not a museum exhibit about the past. It is a process with a measurable annual rate, being recorded by people with callipers.
Two centuries of damage
The islands were not empty of consequence before conservation arrived. Whalers and sealers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries took giant tortoises by the tens of thousands as living provisions — the animals can survive many months without food or water, which made them, catastrophically, the perfect ship’s larder. Several island populations were destroyed outright.
The introduced species did the rest. Goats stripped vegetation on Isabela and Santiago to bare rock. Feral pigs dug up tortoise and turtle nests. Rats took eggs and hatchlings. Blackberry and quinine invaded the highlands. Fire ants displaced native invertebrates. On some islands the native ecosystem was functionally dismantled within a century.
What has happened since is one of the more remarkable restoration records anywhere. Project Isabela removed something over a hundred thousand feral goats from northern Isabela and Santiago in the 2000s — an operation involving aerial hunting and Judas goats fitted with radio collars, and the largest island eradication of its kind attempted at the time. Rat eradications have followed on several islands. Tortoise breeding and repatriation programmes run by the national park and the Charles Darwin Foundation have returned thousands of juveniles to islands where the species had collapsed, and the Española population — down to a handful of individuals in the 1960s — has been rebuilt to the point where the breeding programme has been retired.
Not all of it worked. Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island tortoise, died in 2012 without producing offspring, and his subspecies with him. He is now on display in a climate-controlled room on Santa Cruz, which is either a memorial or a warning depending on your temperament.
How the visiting works
Roughly ninety-seven per cent of the land area is national park, and the marine reserve around it is one of the largest in the world. The rules that follow from that are strict, enforced and — for a visitor used to national parks elsewhere — surprising.
Most visitor sites can only be entered with a licensed naturalist guide. Groups are capped. Sites operate on an itinerary system that spaces boats out so that two groups rarely arrive together. You stay on the marked trail, you keep a stated distance from animals even when the animal has not read the rule, you do not touch anything, you do not move anything between islands, and your bags are inspected for seeds and organic material at the airport before you fly in.
There are two ways to visit, and the choice matters more than any other decision. A live-aboard cruise sails overnight, which is the only practical way to reach the western and outer islands — Fernandina, western Isabela, Genovesa, Española — where the endemism is concentrated. Land-based travel from Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal or Puerto Villamil is substantially cheaper, supports local businesses more directly, and is limited to day-trip range, which excludes most of the best sites.
Neither is wrong. But a land-based trip sold as covering the Galápagos is covering a fraction of them, and it is worth knowing that before booking rather than afterwards.
The people problem nobody planned for
About thirty thousand people live in the archipelago, on four inhabited islands, and the resident population has grown many times over since the 1970s. Migration from mainland Ecuador is now legally restricted, but the underlying pull is straightforward: tourism produces incomes far above the mainland average.
Visitor numbers have grown from a few thousand a year in the 1970s to figures in the hundreds of thousands. Every one of those people needs water, food, fuel and waste disposal on islands that have almost no fresh water, very little arable land, and no capacity to process anything. Cargo ships supply the settlements from Guayaquil, and each one is a biosecurity risk — the fire ants, the fruit flies and the parasitic fly Philornis downsi, which kills finch chicks in the nest and is currently one of the most serious threats to the smaller land birds, all arrived this way.
UNESCO placed the islands on its List of World Heritage in Danger in 2007, principally over invasive species, immigration and unmanaged tourism growth, and removed them in 2010 after Ecuador introduced tighter controls. Whether the removal was earned or diplomatic is argued about to this day.
The entry fee charged to foreign visitors was raised in 2024 for the first time in decades, roughly doubling, with the revenue shared between the park, the municipalities and the province. It is the clearest available lever: a small number of people paying a high price does less damage than a large number paying little, and the arithmetic of that has become the central policy question of the archipelago.
When to go, and what changes
There is no bad season in the Galápagos, but there are two distinct ones and they produce genuinely different trips.
The warm-wet season runs roughly December to May. Air and sea are warmer, the water is calmer and clearer, snorkelling is more comfortable, and the islands green up — the arid lowlands, brown for most of the year, flush after rain. Green turtles nest. Land birds breed because there is food. Short, heavy afternoon showers are normal and brief.
The cool-dry season, June to November, is driven by the Humboldt current running strong. The sea drops several degrees and gets rougher, the air is cool and often overcast with the low garúa mist, and the water is nutrient-rich — which means more plankton, poorer visibility, and dramatically more marine activity. This is when the seabirds are at their best: waved albatrosses are on Española from around April to December, blue-footed boobies court, and the whale and shark numbers rise. A wetsuit is not optional.
El Niño scrambles all of it. In strong events the warm water suppresses the upwelling that feeds the whole system, and marine iguanas, sea lions and penguins die in large numbers before recovering over subsequent years. It is a natural cycle, but a warming ocean is expected to intensify it, and the archipelago’s marine populations are among the most exposed on the planet to exactly that.
What you will actually see
The set pieces earn their reputation. Marine iguanas — the only sea-going lizard on earth — graze algae underwater and haul out in black heaps to reheat, sneezing crystallised salt through specialised glands. Blue-footed boobies perform a courtship dance so absurd that it takes an effort not to anthropomorphise it; the blue of the feet is a diet-quality signal, brighter in better-fed birds. Waved albatrosses nest almost exclusively on Española and take off by walking to a cliff and falling.
Underwater is arguably better. Galápagos penguins — the only penguins found north of the equator — hunt in fast lines. Sea lions engage with snorkellers in a way that is difficult to describe without sounding foolish. Off Wolf and Darwin, at the far north and reachable only by liveaboard dive boat, hammerhead sharks school in numbers that constitute one of the great remaining marine spectacles.
And then there is a giant tortoise in a highland pasture on Santa Cruz, doing nothing at all, at a scale that photographs never manage. It may be older than your grandparents. It is entirely indifferent to you, which is, in the end, the whole point of these islands.
