Volcanoes, Waves and the Flower Route
The smallest country on the mainland, crossed in three hours: point breaks that rank with anywhere in the Pacific, a crater lake the colour of antifreeze, coffee towns in the western highlands, and the best-preserved ordinary Maya village on earth.
San Salvador
A day in the capital is enough and is worth it. The cathedral holds Óscar Romero’s tomb; the chapel at the Hospital La Divina Providencia, where he was shot at the altar in 1980, is the more affecting visit, with the house he lived in kept as it was.
Joya de Cerén and Suchitoto
Joya de Cerén is a Maya farming village buried by ash around 600 CE with its gardens, tools and buildings intact — the only site that shows ordinary Maya life rather than ceremonial architecture. Then north to Suchitoto, a colonial town above a reservoir.

Cobbles, an indigo-dyeing tradition being revived, and Lake Suchitlán with its migratory birds. The town was largely emptied during the war and repopulated after; several people will tell you their own version of that.
Santa Ana
West to the second city and the volcano above it — Ilamatepec, the highest in the country, with a crater lake of an unreal turquoise reached by a two-hour climb from Cerro Verde. Guides are compulsory and the group leaves at a fixed hour.
Coatepeque and Tazumal
Lago de Coatepeque is a caldera lake below the volcano, deep blue and best in the morning. Tazumal at Chalchuapa is the country’s largest excavated Maya site, layered and much altered by a mid-century restoration in concrete.
The Ruta de las Flores
The coffee-town road at 1,200 metres: Juayúa for the weekend food fair, Apaneca for the canopy and the crater lakes, Ataco for murals, Nahuizalco for the night market. Cool air, and the best walking in the country between the towns.
Down to the coast
Ninety minutes to the Pacific. El Tunco is the sociable one with a beginner-friendly beach break; Punta Roca at La Libertad is the serious right-hand point, and one of the best waves in the Americas when the southern swell arrives.
East along the coast
The Carretera Litoral runs east past Playa El Zonte — where the bitcoin experiment began, and where some places genuinely do accept it — and on toward Las Flores and El Cuco, long right-handers with far fewer people on them.
Out
The airport is forty minutes from the coast, which means a morning surf before an afternoon flight is a realistic plan. Eat pupusas on the way.
Dobré vedieť
The security situation has changed drastically since the 2022 state of exception, and Salvadorans will tell you so — along with what it has cost in due process. Check your government’s current advice, which has been revised repeatedly.
The currency is the US dollar. Bitcoin is legal tender in a narrowed form and accepted in a handful of coastal places; it is a curiosity rather than a payment plan.
Surf season runs roughly March to October on the southern swell. The water is warm year-round and a wetsuit is unnecessary.
