The smallest Andean country packs four worlds into a day’s drive: colonial Quito on the equator, the volcano corridor south to Cuenca, a descent into the cloud forest, and — for those who add it — the archipelago that rewrote biology.

Quito, and the altitude

QuitoPresun: Arrival flightUbytovanie: Old town guesthouse

The capital sits at 2,850 metres in a valley twelve kilometres long and three wide. Take the day gently: the old town is the largest and best-preserved colonial centre in the Americas and the first of the UNESCO World Heritage sites ever listed. La Compañía, gilded floor to ceiling, is the one to see if you see only one.

The middle of the world

Mitad del MundoPresun: Bus or taxi northUbytovanie: Old town guesthouse

The TelefériQo cable car climbs to 4,000 metres on Pichincha for the whole valley at once. Afternoon at the equator monument north of the city — and the neighbouring Intiñan museum, which sits closer to the actual line that GPS later put a couple of hundred metres from the monument.

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi NPPresun: Day trip or transfer southUbytovanie: Hacienda near Machachi

One of the highest active volcanoes on earth at 5,897 metres, and an almost geometric cone when it chooses to show itself. The road runs to the refuge car park at 4,600 m; the walk to the refuge itself is short, steep and a serious altitude test. Wild horses on the páramo below.

04

The Quilotoa crater

QuilotoaPresun: Bus via LatacungaUbytovanie: Chugchilán lodge

A caldera lake the colour of oxidised copper, 3,900 metres up, with a rim path and a steep descent to the water. Stay in Chugchilán or Isinliví rather than at the crater itself — the villages are the point.

Deň
05

The Quilotoa loop on foot

ChugchilánPresun: On footUbytovanie: Chugchilán lodge

The classic walk between villages — Isinliví to Chugchilán, or Chugchilán to Quilotoa — through canyon farmland on trails used daily by the people who live there. Four to six hours, no technical difficulty, plenty of altitude.

06

Baños and the eastern slope

Baños de Agua SantaPresun: Bus via AmbatoUbytovanie: Baños hotel

Down to 1,800 metres at the head of the Amazon descent: thermal baths, waterfalls, and the Pailón del Diablo where the Pastaza drops through a gorge you walk into. The adventure-sports economy here is large and of very mixed quality — choose carefully.

Deň
07

Chimborazo

ChimborazoPresun: Transfer southUbytovanie: Riobamba or hacienda

At 6,263 metres it is not the highest mountain above sea level, but because the earth bulges at the equator its summit is the point on the surface furthest from the planet’s centre. Vicuñas on the reserve below, and a road to the first refuge at 4,800 m.

08

Cuenca

CuencaPresun: Bus or short flightUbytovanie: Cuenca colonial hotel

The country’s most attractive city: four rivers, cobbles, blue-domed cathedral, and an old town listed by UNESCO. Sit in a café on the Barranco above the Tomebamba and do very little.

Ingapirca and the hat that is not Panamanian

IngapircaPresun: Day trip from CuencaUbytovanie: Cuenca colonial hotel

Ingapirca is the largest Inca site in Ecuador, built over an earlier Cañari settlement — the two cultures are visible in the stonework. Then a workshop in Sígsig or Chordeleg, where the toquilla-straw hats that the world calls Panamas have been woven since long before the canal.

Cajas

Cajas NPPresun: Bus from CuencaUbytovanie: Cuenca colonial hotel

Half an hour west of Cuenca, a páramo national park of some 270 lakes above 3,500 metres, with polylepis woodland — gnarled, red-barked trees growing higher than trees are supposed to. Weather changes every twenty minutes.

North to the cloud forest

MindoPresun: Flight + road transferUbytovanie: Mindo lodge

Fly back to Quito and drive two hours north-west into the Chocó cloud forest at Mindo — one of the most bird-diverse places on earth, with hummingbird feeders that sound like small engines.

Deň

Birds before breakfast

MindoUbytovanie: Mindo lodge

Out at dawn with a guide for the cock-of-the-rock lek and whatever tanagers the morning produces. Afternoon: a chocolate farm — cacao grows here — or the ride across the river gorge in a hand-hauled cable car.

Out

QuitoPresun: Departure flight

Back to Quito for the flight, or transfer to the airport for the two-hour hop to the Galápagos if you are adding the islands — which is the single best use of another week anyone can make here.

Dobré vedieť

Ecuador uses the US dollar, which removes the currency problem that dominates travel in several neighbouring countries. Small notes are hard to break outside cities.

Altitude is constant here: Quito 2,850 m, Quilotoa 3,900 m, the Cotopaxi refuge 4,600 m. Two nights in Quito before the volcanoes is the minimum.

The Galápagos require a transit control card and a park entry fee, both paid separately from the flight. Check current amounts — the entry fee was raised substantially in 2024.

Kratšie či dlhšie?

1 week

Quito, Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Mindo — the northern half, with no Cuenca leg.

+ Galápagos

Add 5–8 days. A live-aboard reaches the western and outer islands; land-based is cheaper and limited to day-trip range.

+ Amazon

Four days from Coca down the Napo to a lodge in Yasuní — one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.
