A wooden UNESCO capital where a synagogue and a mosque share a car park, then upriver to Maroon villages whose ancestors won a war against the Dutch in the eighteenth century, and out to a turtle beach at the mouth of the Marowijne.
Paramaribo
The historic centre is a UNESCO site of white-painted timber buildings on brick foundations — a Dutch plan built in local materials. The wooden cathedral is among the largest timber structures in the hemisphere, and the synagogue and mosque stand side by side on Keizerstraat.
Four cuisines in one day
Javanese warung for bami and saoto, a Hindustani roti shop, Chinese-Surinamese for dinner, and Creole pom if someone invites you. Between meals: Fort Zeelandia and the museum inside it, which does not avoid the 1982 December murders.
Commewijne plantations
Across the river by ferry or bicycle: the old plantation belt at Frederiksdorp and Nieuw Amsterdam, with sugar and coffee estate remains and a fort that is now an open-air museum. Dolphins in the river mouth at dusk.
Upriver to the Saramaka
Road south to Atjoni, then a long korjaal — dugout canoe — up the Upper Suriname through rapids to a village-partnered lodge. The Saramaka signed a peace treaty with the Dutch in 1762 that recognised their autonomy, and their descendants won a land-rights case at the Inter-American Court in 2007.
A village day
Woodcarving, drumming and textile traditions here were transmitted continuously from West and Central Africa rather than reconstructed. Visits happen on the community’s terms, with a village guide, and photography is asked for rather than assumed.
Rapids and forest
Swim the rapids at the lodge, walk to a creek with a village guide, and hear the history from the people whose history it is. There is no faster way to understand this country than a day on this river.
Brownsberg, or deeper
Back downriver, stopping at Brownsberg above the Brokopondo reservoir — the artificial lake that flooded dozens of Saramaka villages in the 1960s, with dead trunks still breaking the surface. Howler monkeys and a waterfall walk.
East to Galibi
Across to Albina on the Marowijne and by boat to Galibi, co-managed with the Kalina villages there — one of the world’s most important nesting beaches for leatherback turtles, with the season running roughly February to August.
Turtles and the river mouth
Nesting happens at night under strict guiding rules. By day: the Kalina villages, the mangrove, and the Marowijne running out to the Atlantic with French Guiana on the far bank.
Out
Back to Paramaribo and the airport at Zanderij, an hour south. Flights out are mostly to Amsterdam, Curaçao or Belém.
Dobré vedieť
Dutch is the official language and Sranan Tongo is the lingua franca; English gets you a long way in Paramaribo and less far upriver.
The interior is reached by dugout canoe over rapids and by small plane. Journeys take longer than the map suggests and schedules bend around water levels.
Maroon and Indigenous villages are visited by arrangement. Book through lodges that are village-partnered, ask before photographing, and follow the guide’s lead on where you may walk.
