Almost everyone who visits Turks and Caicos goes to Providenciales, and almost everyone who goes to Providenciales goes to Grace Bay — regularly named the best beach in the world and, unusually for that claim, hard to argue with. Twenty kilometres of it, reef-protected, with water that shades from clear to an improbable turquoise.
The rest of the territory is what makes it interesting. Grand Turk, the tiny capital island, ran the salt trade for two centuries and still has the salinas and the donkeys. North and Middle Caicos have caves, ruined plantations and almost no one. South Caicos was the fishing capital and is being rediscovered. The reef along all of it is the third largest on earth.

Third largest in the world, with wall dives off Grand Turk that start close to shore and drop past 2,000 m (6,600 ft).

Conch Bar is the largest cave system in the Bahamas–TCI chain, with Lucayan artefacts found inside it.

The old capital: salinas, colonial Front Street, wild donkeys, and the site where John Glenn was recovered from orbit in 1962.

Providenciales (PLS) has direct flights from many US and Canadian cities and from London. Inter-island flights and the North Caicos ferry connect the rest.

Is there anything beyond Providenciales?
A great deal, and it is where the character is. The ferry to North Caicos runs daily and a causeway links it to Middle Caicos; Grand Turk and South Caicos are short flights. Almost no visitors make the trip.
Why is it so expensive?
Everything is imported, the market is aimed at high-end North American holidays, and there is very little budget accommodation on Providenciales. Self-catering and the outer islands are the ways around it.
When do the whales pass?
North Atlantic humpbacks migrate through the Columbus Passage off Grand Turk and Salt Cay from roughly January to early April, and they can be seen from shore.
