Puerto Rico is the Caribbean without the paperwork for Americans and with all of the paperwork for everyone else: an unincorporated US territory whose residents are US citizens, cannot vote for president while living there, and have kept Spanish as the working language of the island for a century and a quarter of American administration.
What that produces is a place where the dollar is the currency and the post office is federal, but the food is criollo, the music is bomba and plena, and Old San Juan is the oldest European-founded settlement under the US flag. Add the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system and three bioluminescent bays, and the island earns more than a stopover.

San Juan (SJU) is the Caribbean's busiest airport, with direct flights from a dozen US cities and seasonal service from Europe. Aguadilla and Ponce take a handful of mainland routes.

A rental car is close to essential outside San Juan; the público shared-van network exists but runs on its own logic. Ferries reach Vieques and Culebra from Ceiba, and they sell out — book online the moment the window opens.

Do I need a visa for Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is US territory for immigration purposes, so US rules apply exactly: US citizens need no passport arriving from the mainland, and everyone else needs whatever the United States requires of them — ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program, or a US visa. There is no separate Puerto Rican permission.
Is the island recovered from the hurricanes?
Tourism infrastructure in San Juan, Rincón and the main resort areas has been running normally for years. The electrical grid remains the weak point island-wide and outages still happen; most hotels have generators, and it is worth asking.
Can I use dollars and my US phone plan?
Yes to both. The dollar is the currency, and US mobile plans treat Puerto Rico as domestic — no roaming charge on the major American carriers. European SIMs do roam and are charged as the US.
