“The island that lost its capital to a volcano and kept going”
The Soufrière Hills woke in 1995 after centuries of quiet and buried Plymouth, the capital, under metres of ash and pyroclastic deposit. Two thirds of Montserrat became an exclusion zone, most of the population left, and the roughly 4,400 who stayed rebuilt in the north around Brades. It is the only place in the Americas where you can look down on a modern town that has been erased.
The other thing that makes Montserrat unlike its neighbours is Irish. Seventeenth-century indentured Irish settlers left a shamrock on the immigration stamp and surnames that are still everywhere, and St Patrick's Day is a week-long national holiday that also commemorates a slave uprising planned for that date in 1768.

The Volcano Observatory
A working monitoring station that explains what happened and what is still happening, with seismographs running in front of you.
Rendezvous Bay
The island's only white-sand beach, reached by a hot hour over the ridge or a short boat ride. Everything else here is volcanic black.

Ferry or a fifteen-minute flight from Antigua to John A. Osborne (MNI). Both are weather-dependent and neither runs daily.

Is it safe to visit?
Yes. The northern third of the island is a normal Caribbean territory with hotels, roads and schools. The exclusion zone is fenced, monitored continuously and entered only with a licensed guide when the alert level allows.
How do I get there?
The ferry from Antigua takes about ninety minutes and runs several days a week, or small aircraft fly from Antigua in fifteen minutes. There is no direct international service.
Is the volcano still active?
It is dormant rather than extinct, with no major activity for years, and the Volcano Observatory publishes the hazard level continuously. That level governs where guides may take you, and it changes.
