Martinique

ÚzemieSpravuje: France

France in the tropics, with a volcano that rewrote the rules of volcanology

Martinique is not a French colony; it is France — an overseas department and region with the same status as Brittany, sending deputies to Paris and using the euro. That produces a Caribbean island with French motorway signage, a hospital system to match, and boulangeries that would pass in Lyon.

It is also thoroughly Creole. The language of the street is Martinican Creole, the rum is AOC-protected in a way no other Caribbean spirit is, and the north of the island lives under Mont Pelée, whose 1902 eruption killed some 30,000 people in Saint-Pierre in a matter of minutes and gave science the term "nuée ardente".

To najlepšie

01

Mont Pelée

The volcano that destroyed Saint-Pierre in 1902, now walkable to the summit at 1,397 m (4,583 ft) and part of a UNESCO-listed landscape since 2023.

02

Saint-Pierre

The ruined theatre and the cell of the prisoner who survived the eruption are still there. The town rebuilt around its own destruction rather than over it.

03

The rhum agricole distilleries

Made from fresh cane juice rather than molasses and carrying the only appellation d'origine contrôlée in the Caribbean. Depaz sits directly under the volcano.

04

The southern beaches

Les Salines is the postcard, but the Presqu'île de la Caravelle on the Atlantic side has the better walking and none of the crowd.

February carnival and the French school holidays in July and August are the two spikes. September is the cheapest and the wettest.

Regióny, ktoré treba poznať

5

Fort-de-France

The capital, the Schoelcher library and the ferry across the bay.

The north

Mont Pelée, Saint-Pierre, the rainforest and the distilleries.

The south

Sainte-Anne, Les Salines and the sheltered Caribbean beaches.

The Caravelle peninsula

Atlantic cliffs, a ruined château and the best coastal walk on the island.

Trois-Îlets

Marinas, the pottery village and the Empress Joséphine's birthplace.

Praktický sprievodca

Ako sa tam dostať

Fort-de-France (FDF) has direct flights from Paris, plus regional connections and the inter-island ferry to Guadeloupe, Dominica and Saint Lucia.

Doprava po krajine

A car is the practical answer; the road network is French-standard and the island is small enough to cross in ninety minutes. The Fort-de-France–Trois-Îlets ferry saves a long drive around the bay.

Peniaze a ceny

Euro, French banking, cards universal. Prices sit above mainland France for anything imported and below it for rum.

Bezpečnosť

Ordinary French policing and ordinary European precautions. Atlantic-coast swimming needs respect for currents.

Zdravie

EU-standard hospitals; the European Health Insurance Card is valid, which makes this one of the cheapest Caribbean islands to fall ill on.

SIM a internet

French mobile networks with EU roaming — European SIMs work at home rates, which is unusual for the Caribbean.

Časté otázky

Is Martinique in the Schengen area?

No. It is part of France and the EU as an outermost region, but it is outside Schengen. A Schengen visa is not valid here; visitors who need a visa need one endorsed for the French overseas departments, and time spent here does not count against Schengen days.

Do I need to speak French?

It helps a great deal. English is spoken in the main hotels and at the marinas and much less elsewhere — this is an ordinary French department, not a tourism enclave.

What is the sargassum situation?

Seaweed landings affect the Atlantic-facing east and south-east coasts seasonally, typically strongest between March and August. The Caribbean-facing west coast is largely unaffected, and the prefecture publishes daily monitoring.
