Guadeloupe is a butterfly on the map and two different islands in practice, split by a channel narrow enough to cross on a bridge. Basse-Terre, the western wing, is volcanic: La Soufrière rises to 1,467 m (4,813 ft), still steams, and the rainforest around it is a national park and UNESCO biosphere reserve. Grande-Terre, the eastern wing, is flat limestone — cane fields, dry forest and the beaches.
It is a French overseas department, so the euro is the currency and the administration is Parisian, but the culture is thoroughly Creole and gwo ka drumming is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. Three inhabited islands sit offshore — Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and La Désirade — and each is a different pace again.

Pointe-à-Pitre (PTP) has direct flights from Paris and regional connections. Ferries link Dominica, Martinique and Saint Lucia.

Is Guadeloupe in the Schengen area?
No. It is France and it is in the EU as an outermost region, but it is outside Schengen. A Schengen visa does not admit you; visitors who need a visa need one endorsed for the French overseas departments, and days here do not count against Schengen.
Which wing should I stay on?
Grande-Terre for beaches and easy logistics, Basse-Terre for rainforest, waterfalls and the volcano. The island is small enough to base on one and day-trip to the other, and most people underestimate the driving time between them.
Is the volcano safe to climb?
La Soufrière is monitored continuously and the prefecture publishes the alert level. It has been on a raised watch level for years without closing the trail; check the current status before you go, and expect the summit to be in cloud.
