Falkland Islands
Sporné územieSpravuje: United Kingdom — claimed by Argentina as the Islas Malvinas
“Five penguin species, half a million sheep, and a war that is still politics”
The Falklands sit some 500 km (310 mi) east of Patagonia: treeless, windswept and extraordinarily rich in wildlife. Five species of penguin breed here — king, gentoo, Magellanic, rockhopper and macaroni — along with black-browed albatross colonies numbering in the hundreds of thousands, elephant seals and sea lions.
The islands are a British Overseas Territory, self-governing in everything but defence and foreign affairs, and claimed by Argentina as the Islas Malvinas — a dispute that produced the 1982 war and has never been settled. Around 3,600 people live here, most of them in Stanley, and the last landmines from the war were cleared in 2020.

Praktický sprievodca
Ako sa tam dostať
Mount Pleasant (MPN) takes the weekly LATAM service from Santiago and the RAF airbridge from the UK. Nothing is frequent, and a missed connection costs a week.
Doprava po krajine
FIGAS light aircraft link the outer islands on a schedule published the evening before. Hire 4×4s in Stanley; off-road driving needs local knowledge.
Peniaze a ceny
Falkland Islands pound at parity with sterling; sterling is accepted, FKP is not usable elsewhere. Cards work in Stanley, less so beyond.
Bezpečnosť
Effectively no crime. Weather, unfenced cliffs and the sea are the hazards.
Zdravie
A hospital in Stanley; serious cases are flown to the UK or Uruguay. Comprehensive insurance is essential.
SIM a internet
Mobile coverage in Stanley and around the settlements; nothing across the camp. Data is expensive and slow.
Šoférovanie
Sealed road covers only part of the route between Stanley and Mount Pleasant; the rest is gravel or open camp. Off-road driving without a guide gets vehicles bogged routinely.

Falkland IslandsČasté otázky
How do I get there?
A weekly LATAM flight from Santiago via Punta Arenas, which stops in Argentina once a month in each direction, or the RAF airbridge from Brize Norton via Ascension. Cruise ships call in the southern summer.
Are the minefields still there?
No. Clearance finished and the islands were declared free of landmines in November 2020. Signs and fences remain in a few places as historical markers.
Is it awkward to travel there from Argentina?
The sovereignty dispute is live and Argentina restricts links, so there is no routine service from the mainland — the Santiago flight is the practical route. Argentine entry stamps cause no problem on arrival in the islands.
