Curaçao is not a Dutch colony and not an independent state: it is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, running its own affairs since the Netherlands Antilles dissolved in 2010. Willemstad grew rich on trade and salt, and its merchant houses — Dutch in shape, painted in every colour there is — are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The everyday language is Papiamentu, a creole with Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and African roots that is a full official language here. The island sits south of the hurricane belt, which makes it one of the few Caribbean destinations that is genuinely a year-round proposition, and its reef starts close enough to shore that the best diving is reached by walking in.

Willemstad
Punda and Otrobanda face each other across the harbour, linked by a pontoon bridge that swings open for ships. The whole historic centre is UNESCO-listed.
Shore diving
Reef within swimming distance at dozens of marked entries. The Tugboat and Playa Kalki are the names everyone knows; there are forty more.
Christoffel National Park
The island's high point at 372 m (1,220 ft), climbed in about an hour and a half, with a dry landscape of cactus and divi-divi trees.
The western bays
Grote Knip, Playa Lagun and Playa Porto Mari — small coves under cliffs, most with a bar and a dive shack and nothing else.

Hato (CUR) takes direct flights from Amsterdam, Miami and several South American and Caribbean cities. Aruba and Bonaire are twenty minutes away by air.

Hire a car — the west end is an hour from Willemstad and the buses are infrequent. Roads are good and signage is Dutch-standard.

Caribbean guilder pegged to the dollar; dollars accepted, euros generally not. Cards everywhere, ATMs dispense both guilders and dollars.

Willemstad tourist areas are routine; petty theft from parked cars at remote beaches is the common complaint. Leave nothing visible.

Is Curaçao affected by hurricanes?
It lies south of the main hurricane belt and direct hits are rare, which is why the island markets itself as year-round. Rare is not never — tropical systems have passed close enough to matter, most memorably in 1877 and 2010.
What currency should I bring?
The Caribbean guilder replaced the Netherlands Antillean guilder in 2025 and is pegged to the US dollar. Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and euros are not; cards work throughout.
Do I need Dutch?
No. English is widely spoken and Papiamentu is the language of the street. Learning "bon bini" and "danki" goes further than it should.
