“The easiest sailing in the world, and granite boulders the size of houses”
The BVI exist for sailing. The Sir Francis Drake Channel runs between Tortola and a chain of islands strung along its southern side, so the water is sheltered, the next anchorage is always visible, and the navigation is line-of-sight. It is the busiest bareboat charter ground on earth for exactly those reasons.
On land the signature is The Baths on Virgin Gorda — granite boulders the size of small buildings tumbled into the sea, forming grottoes and tidal pools you scramble through rather than walk around. The territory took a severe hit from Hurricane Irma in 2017 and has rebuilt; the charter fleet is back to full strength.
To najlepšie
The Baths, Virgin Gorda
Granite boulders piled into caves and pools at the water's edge. Arrive before ten or after four; the middle of the day belongs to the day boats.
Bareboat sailing
Sheltered water, short hops and moorings everywhere. A week here is the standard introduction to chartering for a reason.
The wreck of the Rhone
A Royal Mail steamer sunk in the 1867 hurricane off Salt Island, in 6–25 m of water — one of the great Caribbean dives.
Jost Van Dyke
White Bay, the Soggy Dollar Bar and a permanent population under three hundred. The original beach-bar island.

Praktický sprievodca
Ako sa tam dostať
Beef Island (EIS) takes regional flights only; most visitors fly into St Thomas or San Juan and take the ferry, which needs the US entry permission for the transit.
Doprava po krajine
Inter-island ferries are frequent and cheap. On Tortola, taxis and hire cars; on the water, your own boat.
Peniaze a ceny
US dollar. Cards on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, cash on the smaller islands.
Bezpečnosť
Low crime. Sailing hazards and sun exposure are the real risks.
Zdravie
A hospital in Road Town; serious cases go to Puerto Rico or Miami. Evacuation cover matters here more than most places.
SIM a internet
Reasonable 4G on the main islands, patchy at anchor.
Šoférovanie
Tortola's roads are extremely steep — gradients over 20 per cent are common — and most hire cars are automatics for that reason. Take the ridge road slowly in rain.

British Virgin IslandsČasté otázky
Do I need to sail to enjoy the BVI?
No, but the territory is built around boats and the land-based options are limited to Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Day charters and the inter-island ferries cover most of what a sailing week would.
Is it recovered from Irma?
Yes in the essentials — charter fleets, ferries, restaurants and most hotels have been operating for years. A few properties never reopened, and the landscape still shows it in places.
Can I hop to the US Virgin Islands?
Ferries run to St Thomas and St John in about half an hour, but it is an international crossing: you clear US immigration on arrival, which means an ESTA or US visa for anyone who needs one.
