Aruba runs on tourism more completely than any of its neighbours, and it does it well: a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with its own parliament, a US pre-clearance facility at the airport, and a hotel strip along Palm Beach that fills every winter.
What the brochures skip is how dry it is. Annual rainfall is under 500 mm, the interior is cactus and boulder field, and the windward north coast is a wall of surf where swimming is genuinely dangerous. That contrast — resort strip on one side, desert and blowholes on the other — is the island's real character.

Eagle and Palm beaches

Queen Beatrix (AUA) has heavy US traffic plus direct flights from Amsterdam and regional connections. Ferries do not run to the neighbouring islands — those are short flights.

Arubus covers the resort strip and Oranjestad cheaply and reliably; a car or a 4×4 is needed for Arikok and the north coast.

Do I clear US immigration in Aruba?
If you are flying to the United States, yes — Aruba has a US pre-clearance facility, so you complete US immigration before boarding and arrive domestically. Allow extra time and note that US entry requirements apply at that desk.
Is it outside the hurricane belt?
Yes, along with Bonaire and Curaçao. Direct hits are very rare, which is why the island trades year-round, but a passing system can still bring days of rain and swell.
Can I swim on the north coast?
No. The windward coast has powerful surf and undertow, with drownings most years. Swimming is on the leeward south-west side, which is where every beach you have heard of is.
