Two volcanic spires rising straight out of the sea, a drive-in caldera, rainforest with a parrot brought back from near-extinction, and a Friday-night street party that has been running for decades. Small island, unusually complete.
Rodney Bay and the north
Land at Hewanorra in the south — the drive north takes ninety minutes — or at the small Castries airport. Pigeon Island, joined to the mainland by a causeway in the 1970s, holds an eighteenth-century British garrison and a view to Martinique.
Castries and the market
The capital burned repeatedly and is more functional than picturesque, but the Saturday market is the real thing, and the Derek Walcott Square commemorates a Nobel laureate in literature from an island of under two hundred thousand people.
South to Soufrière
The west-coast road climbs and drops through fishing villages and banana terraces — the crop that was the backbone of the rural economy until the WTO banana rulings removed the European preference. The Pitons appear at the last bend.
Sulphur Springs and the mud
You drive into the collapsed caldera of Soufrière volcano, among vents and boiling grey mud, then bathe downstream in the mineral-heavy hot springs. Then the Diamond Falls botanical gardens, where the water runs coloured with dissolved minerals.
Gros Piton
Two hard hours up on steps and roots with a required guide, 771 metres, and the whole south of the island at the top. Petit Piton is steeper, unmaintained and generally discouraged — the view of it is better than the view from it.
The reef between the peaks
Anse Chastanet drops off steeply straight from the beach — some of the most convenient good reef access in the Caribbean, inside the Pitons Management Area marine reserve. Snorkel it in the morning before the boats.
The rainforest interior
The Edmund Forest Reserve trail crosses the island’s spine through primary rainforest. The Saint Lucia parrot — down to a few dozen birds in the 1970s and recovered through one of the region’s clearest conservation successes — is findable early with a guide.
Gros Islet, and out
Back north for the Friday street party that has been running for decades — sound systems, barbecue drums, and a crowd more local than the resort strip five minutes away would suggest. Fly out Saturday.
Good to know
Gros Piton requires a licensed guide from the Fond Gens Libre interpretive centre — this is enforced and the fee supports the community that runs it.
The west-coast road is winding, narrow and slow. Ninety minutes on the map is ninety minutes in practice, and driving is on the left.
Hewanorra in the south handles the long-haul flights; Castries handles the regional ones. Check which one your ticket uses before booking accommodation.
Shorter or longer?
Soufrière only — the Pitons, the springs and the reef, ignoring the north entirely.
Ferry south to Saint Vincent and island-hop through Bequia and the Tobago Cays.
North by regional flight for the best hiking in the Caribbean and no beaches at all.
