The Fortress, the Railway and Nevis
The first English colony in the Caribbean, with a UNESCO fortress built over a century by enslaved labour, the last sugar railway in the region now running as a scenic loop, and a second island across the channel that nearly seceded in 1998.
Basseterre
A small working capital with a circus modelled on Piccadilly and a Georgian street grid. The National Museum in the old treasury building covers the Kalinago, the sugar era and the 2005 closure of the last sugar industry in the eastern Caribbean.
Brimstone Hill
A fortress 230 metres up on a volcanic outcrop, built over more than a century, called the Gibraltar of the West Indies and inscribed by UNESCO — which states directly that British engineers designed it and enslaved Africans built it.
The sugar railway
A narrow-gauge line built between 1912 and 1926 to carry cane to the central factory. When the industry closed the track was kept and turned into a scenic railway, which now loops the island past the ruins of the estates it was built to serve.
Mount Liamuiga
A 1,156-metre dormant volcano climbed in a hard half-day through rainforest to a crater you can descend into on ropes. The forest on its slopes is regenerating over abandoned cane, which makes the island greener now than in any twentieth-century photograph.
The southeast peninsula
A road opened in the 1990s runs down to the good beaches and the strait facing Nevis. The vervet monkeys, introduced from Africa in the seventeenth century, now outnumber the human population and are entirely unbothered by you.
Across to Nevis
Twenty minutes by ferry to a quieter island dominated by a 985-metre cone almost permanently wearing a cloud — which is where the name comes from. Charlestown is stone and shingle and small.
Plantation inns and Hamilton
Several of the estate great houses are now small hotels, which is a complicated kind of reuse and worth thinking about while you are in one. The museum at the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, who left at seventeen, is a short walk from the ferry.
Nevis Peak, or the sea, and out
The peak is steep, muddy and rope-assisted, and takes most of a day — do not underestimate it. The alternative is the hot springs at Bath and a last swim at Pinney’s Beach before the ferry and the flight.
Good to know
The ferry between the two islands runs frequently but not late; check the last sailing before planning an evening on the other side.
Mount Liamuiga and Nevis Peak are both harder than their modest heights suggest — steep, muddy, and best with a guide.
Cruise ship days transform Basseterre. If the port is full, go to Brimstone Hill in the afternoon rather than the morning.
Shorter or longer?
Saint Kitts only — fortress, railway and the peninsula.
Base entirely on Nevis and day-trip across; it is the quieter half by an order of magnitude.
A short hop east for the Georgian dockyard and Barbuda.
