Jamaica without an all-inclusive: the city that produced more recorded music per head than anywhere on earth, a dawn climb to 2,256 metres, Maroon towns with their own treaties, and a south coast run by the people who live on it.

Day
01

Kingston

KingstonGetting here: Arrival flightStay: Uptown Kingston guesthouse

The city almost every package visitor skips and where the country actually is. The National Gallery, Devon House, and an evening that involves a sound system rather than a hotel band.

Day
02

Trench Town and Hope Road

KingstonStay: Uptown Kingston guesthouse

Trench Town Culture Yard is community-run and is the better of the two Marley sites; the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road is his actual house, with the bullet holes from the 1976 attempt still in the wall. Both are serious visits.

Day
03

Into the Blue Mountains

Blue MountainsGetting here: 4x4 transferStay: Mountain guesthouse

An hour of switchbacks into cloud and coffee. The estates here grow at altitude in mist, which is why the beans command the prices they do — tour one that roasts on site rather than one that sells souvenirs.

Day
04

The peak before dawn

Blue Mountain PeakGetting here: Guided night hikeStay: Mountain guesthouse

Leave around one in the morning to reach 2,256 metres for sunrise. On a clear morning Cuba is visible two hundred kilometres north. The descent takes the rest of the day and your knees will discuss it later.

Day
05

Moore Town

Moore TownGetting here: Road over the rangeStay: Port Antonio guesthouse

The Windward Maroons won a treaty from the British in 1739 and their communities in the Blue and John Crow Mountains maintain the abeng — the cow-horn signal instrument used in the wars — and the Kromanti tradition, inscribed by UNESCO. Visits are arranged with the community.

Day
06

Port Antonio

Port AntonioStay: Port Antonio guesthouse

The old, low-key end of the island: the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove, Reach Falls, and rafting the Rio Grande on bamboo rafts originally built to move bananas downriver.

Day
07

Boston Bay

Boston BayGetting here: Local transportStay: Port Antonio guesthouse

Jerk was invented in this parish and Boston Bay is where the technique lives — pimento wood, a converted drum, a long slow smoke. Eat it there and understand why what is sold abroad under the name is not the same thing.

Day
08

Across to the south coast

Treasure BeachGetting here: Cross-island driveStay: Treasure Beach guesthouse

A long drive across the island to Treasure Beach — a string of fishing settlements with a community tourism association that predates the term, and almost entirely Jamaican-owned accommodation.

Day
09

Black River and the Pelican Bar

Black RiverGetting here: Boat + local driverStay: Treasure Beach guesthouse

A morning boat up the Black River for crocodiles and mangrove, YS Falls in the afternoon, and a beer at the Pelican Bar — a driftwood shack standing on a sandbar a kilometre offshore, reached by fishing boat.

Day
10

Out

Montego BayGetting here: Drive + departure flight

Montego Bay is two hours north-west for the flight, or back to Kingston if that is where you flew into. Both airports are international.

Good to know

Violent crime is concentrated in specific inner-city communities. The rule every Kingstonian gives is to take local advice on particular areas rather than avoid the capital wholesale — skipping Kingston means skipping the country.

A hire car makes this route work, but driving is on the left, roads are narrow and mountain sections are slow. Route taxis and a hired driver are the common alternative.

The soundtrack of contemporary Jamaica is dancehall, not reggae. Assuming otherwise is the single most reliable marker of a visitor.

Shorter or longer?

5 days

Kingston and the Blue Mountains only — city, peak and coffee.

+ Cockpit Country

Add Accompong and the karst interior, where the Leeward Maroons won their treaty in 1739.

+ north coast

Two or three days at Ocho Rios or Negril if you want the resort strip attached.
