Copán, Cloud Forest and the Bay Islands
The finest Maya sculpture in the world, a colonial west almost nobody visits, cloud forest above 2,800 metres, and a reef where certification costs less than almost anywhere on earth.
Copán Ruinas
In from San Pedro Sula and straight west to the border town — cobbled, small, and pleasant in a way the industrial cities are not. Afternoon at the Macaw Mountain bird reserve to acclimatise.
The site
Copán was never the largest Maya city and produced the best sculpture. The Hieroglyphic Stairway carries the longest known Maya text — over 1,800 glyphs on 62 steps — and the stelae in the Great Plaza are cut in a depth of relief unmatched anywhere. The museum holds a full-scale replica of the Rosalila temple, found intact inside a later pyramid.
Coffee above the ruins
The slopes here grow some of the best coffee in Central America and several fincas run proper farm-to-cup mornings. Afternoon at the hot springs at Luna Jaguar, up a valley north of town.
East to Gracias
Three hours into the colonial west. Gracias was briefly the administrative seat of all Spanish Central America in the 1540s, and looks it — cobbles, a hilltop fort, and thermal baths in the forest outside town.
Celaque
The highest mountain in Honduras at 2,870 metres, wrapped in cloud forest with quetzals in it. The full summit is a hard overnight; the lower trails from the visitor centre are a comfortable day and deliver most of the forest.
The Lenca route
The villages of the Lenca highlands — La Campa, San Manuel Colohete, Belén Gualcho — with white colonial churches, pottery worked in the old way, and Sunday markets. The roads are rough and the payoff is that almost no one comes.
North to the coast
Down to the Caribbean at Tela or La Ceiba, through the banana country that gave the country its economy and its caricature. Jeanette Kawas national park at Punta Sal has mangrove, monkeys and empty beach.
Garifuna coast
Triunfo de la Cruz and Sambo Creek are Garifuna communities where drumming is practised rather than performed, and where the food — coconut, cassava, fish — is unlike anywhere inland. Pico Bonito national park rises straight off the coast behind La Ceiba.
Out to Utila
Ferry from La Ceiba to the smallest of the Bay Islands — a single street, wooden houses over the water, and one of the cheapest places in the world to get a diving certification. Whale sharks pass through seasonally.
The reef
The southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — walls, canyons and seamounts within a short boat ride. Two dives a day and nothing else on the schedule is the correct use of this island.
Out
Fly from Utila or Roatán to San Pedro Sula for the connection. Roatán has the international airport if you would rather not backtrack by ferry.
Good to know
Check current travel advice. Violence in Honduras is concentrated in specific urban areas — principally parts of San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa — and the tourist regions have very different profiles. Avoid the big cities as overnight stops where possible and move between regions in daylight.
Use registered shuttles or reputable bus lines rather than improvising with local transfers between cities.
Utila and Roatán are reached by ferry from La Ceiba; the crossing is notoriously rough and the small plane is worth the difference.
