The Caribbean island with no beaches to speak of and the best hiking in the region by a wide margin: nine volcanoes, a flooded fumarole you walk six hours to reach, the last Kalinago territory in the islands, and resident sperm whales offshore.

Day
01

Roseau

RoseauGetting here: Arrival flight + transferStay: Roseau guesthouse

A small capital of French-colonial timber and stone, rebuilt repeatedly after hurricanes. The Botanic Gardens still display a bus crushed by a baobab in Hurricane David in 1979, which tells you how this island keeps its records.

Day
02

Trafalgar and Titou

Trafalgar FallsGetting here: Local bus or taxiStay: Roseau guesthouse

The twin Trafalgar Falls above Roseau, and Titou Gorge — a narrow slot you swim up against the current to a waterfall at the end. Both are inside Morne Trois Pitons, the UNESCO site covering the volcanic centre.

Day
03

Boiling Lake

Boiling LakeGetting here: Guided hike from LaudatStay: Roseau guesthouse

Six hours return through the Valley of Desolation — a sulphur-vented moonscape of grey mud and hot streams — to a flooded fumarole, the second-largest hot lake on earth, generally invisible under its own steam until the wind shifts. A guide is required and the trail is genuinely hard.

Day
04

Rest, and the reef

Champagne ReefGetting here: Bus southStay: Soufrière guesthouse

Legs off. Champagne Reef south of Roseau has volcanic gas venting through the sand, so you snorkel through rising bubbles over healthy coral. Scott’s Head at the island’s southern tip sits on the rim of a submerged crater.

Day
05

Sperm whales

Dominica west coastGetting here: Licensed whale-watching boatStay: Soufrière guesthouse

Dominica has one of the very few resident sperm whale populations that can be seen year-round, studied continuously for decades by researchers who know individual animals. Licensed operators only, from Roseau, best November to March.

Day
06

A Waitukubuli segment

Waitukubuli National TrailGetting here: Transfer to trailheadStay: Interior eco-lodge

The first long-distance trail in the Caribbean runs the length of the island in fourteen segments, using old Kalinago and maroon paths. Segment 4 or 6 makes a strong day walk; sections damaged by Maria are still being rebuilt.

Day
07

The Kalinago Territory

Kalinago TerritoryGetting here: Bus across the islandStay: Kalinago community guesthouse

On the east coast, the only remaining Kalinago territory in the Caribbean — around 3,700 acres held communally, governed by an elected chief. The Barana Autê cultural village demonstrates canoe-building and the double-walled larouma basketry that predates contact.

Day
08

The north

PortsmouthGetting here: Bus northStay: Portsmouth guesthouse

Portsmouth on Prince Rupert Bay, the Indian River rowed by hand into the swamp forest, and Cabrits National Park with Fort Shirley — a British garrison restored over decades, where a 1802 mutiny by Black soldiers led to their emancipation.

Day
09

Out

Douglas–CharlesGetting here: Regional flight

Douglas–Charles airport is on the north-east coast. There is no international runway for wide-bodies, so expect to connect through Antigua, Barbados or Saint Lucia.

Good to know

Boiling Lake requires a guide, six to eight hours, and real fitness. It is not a walk to attempt on the day you arrive or in heavy rain.

Hurricane Maria in September 2017 stripped the island and destroyed most buildings. Trails, roads and some sites are still being restored segment by segment — check current status rather than assuming.

There are no wide-body flights. Connect through a neighbouring island, and allow for the regional schedules changing.

Shorter or longer?

5 days

Roseau, Boiling Lake, Champagne Reef and the whales.

+ the full trail

Two weeks walking all fourteen Waitukubuli segments end to end, with village accommodation en route.

+ Guadeloupe or Martinique

Ferry north or south — Dominica sits between the two French islands and the crossing is a couple of hours.
