Cayman Islands

TerritoryAdministered by: United Kingdom

A wall that drops into blue at Little Cayman, and stingrays that come to meet the boat

The Caymans are a British Overseas Territory of three islands with an outsized reputation in two fields: offshore finance and diving. The first pays for the roads; the second is why most visitors come. Bloody Bay Wall off Little Cayman starts at six metres and falls away past two thousand, and Stingray City in the North Sound is a sandbar where southern stingrays have met boats for generations.

Grand Cayman carries almost all the population and the whole of the cruise traffic, and Seven Mile Beach is genuinely as good as advertised. The two sister islands are another proposition entirely — Cayman Brac has a bluff and caves, Little Cayman has around 200 residents and more iguanas than people.

Highlights

01

Stingray City

A waist-deep sandbar in the North Sound where southern stingrays gather. Go on the earliest boat, before the cruise fleet arrives.

02

Bloody Bay Wall

Little Cayman's marine park: a vertical drop starting shallow enough that the top of the wall is snorkellable.

03

Seven Mile Beach

Actually about 10 km (6 mi), west-facing, public along its whole length, and the reason Grand Cayman looks the way it does.

04

The Brac bluff

Cayman Brac rises to a 43 m (141 ft) limestone cliff at its eastern end, with caves, a lighthouse and rock climbing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it as expensive as people say?

Yes. The Cayman dollar is worth more than the US dollar, almost everything is imported, and Seven Mile Beach hotel pricing is at the top of the Caribbean. Eating at local spots away from the beach roughly halves the food bill.

Which island for diving?

Little Cayman for the wall, Cayman Brac for the wreck of the Russian frigate and the caves, Grand Cayman for variety and the easiest logistics. Inter-island flights take under an hour.

How bad are the cruise-ship days?

George Town and Stingray City can take several thousand people in a morning. The port publishes a schedule; plan the popular sites for a day with no ships in.
